Today I tried Reese Witherspoons Favorite Green Smoothie.
If you have not yet seen it here is the link

I love a green smoothie.
I like the color green ( my birthstone is emerald).
Green makes me think healthy….. I know this can be misleading since shamrock shakes are green and well not healthy but generally speaking green makes me think healthy.
If done right it doesn’t taste green.
I was pretty pumped when I saw this.
As I stated I love green smoothies and while I am not typically into celebrities Reese Witherspoon has always been one of my favorite actresses.
I was a teenager when Legally Blonde came out and it was one of my absolute favorite movies…. the soundtrack may or may not still be on one of my Playlists .
I also love that she gave credit to Kerry Washington for sharing it with with. Because how often do you read recipes people have “created” that you’ve seen in 5 other places?
She said things about the smoothie that immediately caught my attention… like helping your skin…. I’m just shy of 36 and since I’m breastfeeding I do like no skin care… so nicer skin without a skin care routine sounded amazing.
Yesterday I went to Aldi ( favorite store ever) and excitedly bought all the ingredients. I did unfortunately forget the coconut water but I realized after and I decided if I waited to try it until I bought some then my Lettuce may wilt before I get around to it…
The recipe calls for :
Spinach
Romaine lettuce…2 entire heads
1 apple
1 pear
1 banana
1 lemon…. I bought the seedless ones for convenience
Coconut water ( which I forgot)
When I first tossed everything into the blender I was surprised . I added the water in and blended my romaine first because my blender couldn’t hold everything at once .
I was surprised everything blended as well as it did without much added water.
I did need to add a little more because when I went to pour it was really thick.
I was worried it wouldn’t be sweet enough because you don’t add a sweetner . While I know fruit is sweet I’ve always added a little. Even places like tropical smoothie add sugar.
I was a touch scared to drink it. It didn’t have the normal look of a smoothie to me. Usually when I make smoothies I add a creamy component and something frozen. I feel like that gives it a better appearance.
First taste and I was surprised. It actually did taste good. It was sweet… not overly sweet but decently sweet considering the amount of greens and lemon.
The texture …. that is where it left me feeling like there has to be a better way.
My husband is a good sport and he tried the drink with me. I am much more likely to try something and stick to it with him doing it also.
He went no straw I used a straw. I find it helps me when I’m struggling with texture.
I struggle with texture. Foods like cottage cheese for example I don’t mind the taste but the mouth feel… no thanks.
This drink was thick and I felt like maybe I needed to chew.
I struggled towards the end of the serving to finish it.
My 11 month old tasted it and he liked it.
I think the fruit choosen do a really good job sweetening it.
Apples have about 19 grams of sugar. Pears 17 grams. Bananas 14 grams. So it’s definitely sweet. Not added sugars I know they are naturally occurring but that’s still a decent amount.
No protein either and protein helps to stabilize your blood sugars.
Would I drink it again…. maybe.
I liked the taste … so maybe there is a way to improve its texture. Maybe some ice or avocado. I wonder if it’s the kind of thing where your body anticipates the benefits of it so starts to both accept and crave it? I didn’t like coffee at first and now I can’t picture a morning without my cup of coffee.
I think however I would rather eat it.
I don’t know if there are more benefits in the food being liquid.. maybe the nutrients are easier to digest that way… or using the whole lemon vs juice… I know there are benefits of the whole fruit vs just the juice. It’s also a lot of greens…maybe more so than you would eat.
I personally love volume eating. I am in no way intimidating by a salad using an entire head of lettuce as it’s base. I can’t picture myself eating chunks of lemon on the salad but maybe a dressing could be made blending the Lemons vs just juicing them.
( this may be my next project)
All in all I think it’s definitely worth trying… and she even said in the video it is very customizable. I may try the base of greens with some other fruits and fats and see if I can make my own version.
