I love iced coffee. Just the other day I posted a recipe for my Peppermint Cold Brew Iced Coffee . That recipe got me thinking about how wonderful tea bags are. If you go into the section of the grocery store that has coffee and tea I would bet almost every single time the number of flavored teas greatly exceeds the number of flavored coffees. Why is that? I have absolutely no idea. I used to see more flavors available, and I may be wrong about this but I feel like since K-cups came around there are less bags of flavored coffee. This kind of stinks. I have a Keurig, but I use a reusable filter for my machine. This is better for the environment, and honestly just saves me a TON of money on k-cups. They are convenient but the price tag is a little high for me. This isn’t a big deal because I don’t need a lot of variety in my morning hot coffee, I’m usually not awake enough to fully appreciate that first cup anyway. My iced coffee however, that’s where I like to spice things up a bit. I use flavored syrups and creamers sometimes, but I am finding that not all are created equal. Plus sometimes to get more flavor I need to use more, and since they are sweetened that sometimes leaves me with coffee that’s too sweet. Tea bags to the rescue.
I was looking at all the varieties of tea in the store, and then in my pantry once home. My oldest loves tea, and I do too, so we have quite a bit of variety. I decided to use a decaf tea because I am watching my caffeine and didn’t want to add any additional caffeine to my drink. That’s when I remembered the box of decaf chai spice. Chai is one of my favorite things. Ever have an iced chai from Starbucks? Heaven… but way way too expensive for my taste. I was still so pleased with my peppermint coffee that I thought why not! I love pumpkin spice coffee so I thought this could come out similar. It was really really good. Enough of my babbling, here’s how to make it.
What you need:
Cold brew maker
A large mug
3 chai spice tea bags ( I used decaf)
1 cup coffee grounds of choice ( frugal tip – even cheap store brand coffee works just fine.. because you aren’t heating it up it doesn’t get bitter!)
Water (my iced coffee maker is 1000ml or about 34 oz)- about 16 oz hot 16oz cold
Directions
In a large mug brew 2 of the 3 chai spice tea bags in hot water. let sit for 20-25 minutes for a nice strong flavor.

Don’t mind the dragon. My son left his toy dragon on the table and I thought it looked fun it the picture so I decided to go with it. I was also very tired at the time which probably made it much funnier at the time than it actually is 🙂
Pour coffee into Cold Brew Pitcher
Add the last spiced chai tea bag on top of the coffee grounds. Don’t forget to take off the paper tag if your tea bag has one.
After the tea is ready pour into pitcher over coffee grounds. Add remaining water.

Let coffee sit for 24 hours. You can go longer if you would like, but I highly recommend getting to the 24 hour mark. The flavor will me much richer.
I like to enjoy mine as an iced coffee with cream and some sugar free vanilla syrup
Chocolate and cinnamon would also be a nice addition.
Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of my finished iced coffee to share with you. My mom was over for a visit and we finished off the picture before it occurred to me to take a picture. Maybe next time 🙂
If you give this a try let me know what you think. I hope you enjoy!
